According to online newspaprer Pakistan Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has felicitated
Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and the Foreign Office on the election of
Pakistan t as member of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. Pakistan has been elected for a three
year term to the United Nations Human Rights Council, an intergovernmental body
within the UN system by securing 171 votes out of the total 191 votes in the
election held today in New York.
] Congratulating
Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, the President said that the election of
Pakistan demonstrated the trust and confidence of the international community
in Pakistan as much as it was recognition of efforts for the promotion of human
rights in the country. The victory was a measure of the steady and
gradual improvement of human rights record in the country, he said.
The President lauded Foreign office for its
efforts to garner international support and in projecting Pakistan’s case.
President Zardari also felicitated Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Advisor Human Rights
for his efforts in improving the human rights record and by advocating the
signing and ratification of various international human rights covenants. The President said that the election of
Pakistan in UN Human Rights Council would contribute to dispelling the negative
impression about human rights violation
.
The 47-member UN Human Rights Council is composed of 13 countries from
Africa, 13 from Asia, six from Eastern Europe, eight from Latin America and the
Caribbean, and seven from Western Europe and other states. The Geneva-based
council is mandated to promote and protect human rights and prevent human
