Pakistan would reduce its delicate record to only 100 products by 2017 and Native indian will bring its delicate record down to 100 products by 2013 under SAFTA. But we have a long way to go for serenity, balance and to accept each other.

Lastly we hope that the participant States start for the following reasons:

•       Hoping for of motivating serenity, consistency, balance and success in the area through strict commitment to the concepts of the United Countries Rental, particularly regard for the concepts of sovereign equal rights, territorial reliability, nationwide independence, non-use of power and non-interference in the inner matters of other States and relaxing agreement of all conflicts.

•       Aware that in an extremely interdependent world, the goals of serenity, independence, public rights and financial success is best obtained in the Southern Oriental area by caring common knowing, excellent neighbourly interaction and significant cooperation among the Member States which are limited by connections of way of life and record.

•       Acknowledging the value of linking variations, developing better knowing and advertising amity and mutually valuable and extensive cooperation to be able to advertise effective linkages and relationship for greater activity of people, improved investment and exchange the area.

•       Strengthen the linkage of development and democracy;

•       Enhance maintainable development and relief of hardship through excellent govt, reasonable and participatory processes;

•       Ensure sex mainstreaming in govt and society;

•       Support participatory democracy recognized by free, reasonable and reliable elections.

Dowry is Not a Curse

Among the patriarchal social traditions frequent in our community, the extensive exercise of jahez (dowry) impacts both non-urban and city females. The amount of dowry a lady delivers to her in-laws at the time of marriage differs based on her close relatives prosperity, but certain content objectives such as providing the in-laws house and presenting silver jewellery and ornamented outfits to the category of the spouse are generally the lowest conventional for many family members.

The potential significances of advertising dowry are obvious in a community where the beginning of a lady is noticeable by a cry of sadness. Dowry is not a problem, it’s a bane- something that  marks a female's self-respect and drives her towards an ignominious end only.

Our Children Are eligible to a Few Gaps of Unique President

On 15th December, the horrific murder of twenty children and six adults at a primary school in the U.S state of Connecticut made news headlines globally; it also reignited a raging debate over implementation of gun control and limiting arms sale to the general public. In the aftermath of the tragedy, an emotional Barack Obama shed tears of grief and vouched for meaningful action against an increasingly deadly menace.

Only a parent knows the true love for his or her child, it is one of the greatest gifts that Almighty Allah bestows upon his creation and there is an accompanying exodus of endless bliss and infinite joy. Every child is precious and deserves to be loved, appreciated, nurtured and provisioned for.

In this context, every conscientious human being shares the limitless grief suffered by the parents of the brutally murdered children in Newtown, Connecticut. Yet, there is an utterly befuddling paradox to tackle. When all children are as delicate as flowers, then why does the world shed tears when one set of them is brutally maimed and keeps criminally silent when another set is ravaged by bombs and drone attacks?

Why can’t Obama shed a single tear for a mutilated child in Gaza, Kabul or North West Pakistan? Is it because it is his hand that presses the missile trigger? Or were these children harboring some kind of a militant and anti-occupation intent?

On the 17th of December, George Monbiot wrote a fabulously though provoking article in the Guardian, entitled “In the U.S, mass child killings are tragedies. In Pakistan, mere bug splats”. The term bug splats according to the author, first appeared in a rolling stone magazine report, and is used by the drone operators to label their victims. He also referred to a meticulously compiled; first hand researched report entitled “living under drones” released by the law schools at Stanford and New York universities.

This report makes for an eye opening and gut wrenching read, “from June 2004 through mid-September 2012, 474-881 civilians including 176 children were killed by drone strikes in Pakistan”. Evidence collected from extensively conducted primary research also reported wide spread hysteria and psychological trauma amongst the civilian populous as a result of twenty four hour hovering of drones. Ironically, in the first three years of the mellow hearted Barack’s presidency, 297-569 civilians including atleast 64 children were killed by drone strikes in Pakistan.

Not even Ban Ki Moon at the U.N shed a single tear of grief for them, perhaps these are children not made of flesh and blood, not made of twinkling eyes and crystalized laughter and boundless energy. Perhaps their parents didn’t wail and cry in utter despair and lost all meaning and hope that constitutes this ultimate gift of life.

Having said that; moaning and lamenting about the world not feeling our pain is a fruitless endeavor, as there are countless people amongst us who defend the collateral damage by arguing that these drone strikes also kill militants. In the process, they conveniently ignore the fact that a disgruntled victim might become the next suicide attacker and kill more innocent civilians in return, thus completing a vicious cycle of death that has no seeming end in sight.

To us the death of someone else’s child is an acceptable exception. We only choose to grieve for the killings that are widely reported and lamented in the media. This is not surprising for a country like Pakistan, where fifty precious lives maybe lost in a day yet hardly a soul sheds a tear or asks a question.

Our leaders non apparent vision may be blinded by their corruption laden, power crazy antics. But how come a U.S president who is a Harvard Law school graduate and seemingly embedded with all the intellect and vision in the world resort to such blatant double standards?

14 ‘Shoulds’ for a Better Pakistan

Pakistan has been in turmoil for a long time now. Embroiled in political, ideological, social and economic chaos, I hope that the year 2013 will be the beginning of peace, enlightenment and prosperity in Pakistan. To move towards betterment, I, as a Pakistani, propose fourteen SHOULDS on this occasion that I promise can change the course of our country but also require paradigmatic changes in our national priorities. Here goes the list:

1. Education should be at the top of our priority list with at least 20 percent of our annual budget spent on providing quality education to the people of Pakistan.

2. As a sage once said, ‘If you want to see the condition of a nation, see the condition of the teacher.’ So teachers should be the most valued (in the real sense of the word) people in the country.

3. Our hospitals should be our second principal priority after education.

4. We should make every effort to establish complete peace with our neighbouring countries including our arch-rival India. In this regard we can learn from European countries such as Germany, France, and the UK.

5. We should devote ourselves to spreading a network of playgrounds in every city, town and village of our country.

6. There should be a network of libraries, packed with books, magazines and journals and keeping with the pace of technological advancement, equipped with computers in every city and town.
7. There should be immediate and complete ban on pressure horns on roads and streets and gradually the ban should come down to eliminating honking at all.  Of course people need to be educated through electronic and print media against the indiscriminate use of horns and other sources of noise pollution in our environment.

8. There should be a centrally administered system of mosques in the country. The Imams should be at least secondary school graduates besides their religious qualifications and should be recruited by the local administrative authority. They should be paid adequately for their services with the help and cooperation of the local community. The Friday sermons and teaching of these Imams should be monitored and they should be educated to present the peaceful, inclusive, humanitarian face of religion to the people .This will guard against the tendency among some of them of turning religion into sectarianism, extremism and the resultant violence.

9. Democracy should be embraced, nurtured and practiced in the true sense of the word. Practical efforts should be made to take the power concentration out of the feudal class and to bring it down to the reach of the common people. The first challenge in this regard is for political parties to become truly democratic and shun hereditary and dictatorial practices prevalent inside their ranks. Our armed forces should once and for all decide not to ever interfere in our political system and confine themselves to barracks .Let us for the coming thirty years, at least, try democracy without interference in its true essence.

10. A Pakistani nationalism based on an international, humanitarian philosophy should be nurtured through a nationwide system of inclusive education. The purpose should be to broaden the horizons of the Pakistani youth to feel a part of the rest of the world instead of becoming paranoia to unseen enemies.  The concept of positive national ego should be promoted to upbring an independent youth that relies on itself rather than seek helping hands in times of difficulties.

11. Strength in terms of economic and social development should be our primary goal driving our national policies and not just military might and our capability for destruction. Live and let live should be our motive from now onwards if we really want to continue to exist and flourish in the comity of nations in the twenty first century.

12. Rigorous measures should be taken to control our dangerously growing population, which is already beyond our means. Poverty, illiteracy, ignorance and misinterpretation of religion are main sources of this menace. The role of religious leaders is of special importance in this regard.

13. An important indicator of the degree of civilization of a society is the way women are treated in it. Women emancipation through a process of education and awareness among the masses should be one of our top priorities. Pakistani women are exemplary in their devotion to their families and the welfare of those around them and this extraordinary source of our strength must be taped by giving them their due place in the social, economic and political spheres of our national life.

Again the role of religious leaders is of primary importance in this regard; many of whom unfortunately confine the role of women to domestic chores. These religious leaders consciously or unconsciously use their enormous clout as opinion makers against the economic and social freedom and autonomy of our women. This trend needs to be changed and women be brought into our national life as equal partners and stakeholders.

14. We should, as a nation, make it a core principle of our national ethos that a society cannot live for long in the presence of injustice and endemic corruption. It should, therefore, be one of the top-most priorities to clean up corruption in our legal, administrative and political system, to have an independent, well-paid judiciary and an excellent, efficient and corruption-free police force.

P.S: Seems a loony’s dream? Well, maybe, but this country was a dream before its birth, a dream of hope and peace and prosperity before it was turned, by the monsters who ruled it for years on, into a nightmare for its inhabitants. And with the positive energies of our youth, can once more, we have the beginning of a noble dream and a lovely reality.
